NEURAL SWIMMIMG TECHNIQUE
It is all about your Timing...
At Swimmers Acceleration we understand that higher velocities will only come from paying attention to the timing of your stroke. Two this end we teach and fully recommend that open ware swimmers use one of the two timings below, which are the Kayak and the Power Kayak
Kayak
The Kayak freestyle relies on a higher stroke rate with a more immediate catch in front in order to sustain the speed. Kayak distance freestylers would include:
• Lotte Friis
• David Davies
• Federica Pellegrini
• Ryan Cochrane
• Kieren Perkins
The Kayak timing is also seen in the sprint events, from 50m -200m. It is characterized by a quicker catch of the entry hand and a quicker release, creating more arm strokes but with less time to rotate the hips.
Therefore, not as much power is generated from each arm pull, but since there are so many more of them, the frequency can make up the difference.
The Kayak timing can be swum with a straight arm or bent arm recovery action. 2011 World 100m Freestyle Champion Jeanette Ottensen Gray of Denmark uses this technique.
Power Kayak:
The Power Kayak timing requires the swimmer to have one arm under their sternum as their recovering arm enters the water swimmers who use or have used the Power Kayak timing are:
• Dawn Fraser
• Alex Popov
• Aleksandra Herashmienia
• Ranomi Kromowidjojo
• Rowdy Gaines
• Libby Lenton
